Harptone E-6N Acoustic

Harptone E-6N Acoustic

Harptones with rounded pickguards from 2200 to around 2600 could be 1968 to 1971 and the owner is left to interpolate (educated guess) what year he or she thinks it is depending on the number. Harptones with dovetail pickguards between 2000 and around 2700 are 1972 up to 1975, again using interpolation to guess a particular year.

1946 Gibson J-45

1946 Gibson J-45

A genuine post-war banner-era-adjacent J-45 from 1946. A player's guitar that sounds great right out of the case. A luthier's analysis confirms it has already had the expensive structural work done by a previous owner. Details provided below. ## Luthier's Notes We brought this guitar to an independent repair and restoration specialist and recorded his evaluation. His assessment, in summary: **On the structural work already done.** "These are notorious for all the braces being loose — if one brace is loose, they're all loose. But this has been tightened up before. All the braces are tight." The cracks are closed and the neck has been set. Whoever did the work "did a really nice job." He estimated that having that package of work done today — gluing all the cracks, re-gluing all the braces, and setting the neck — would run **$1,500–$1,700**. That cost is already behind this instrument. **On the overspray.** His own preference is to leave vintage instruments alone: "I'm not really the shiny penny guy. I'd rather leave it alone — that way it leaves less qualification when you have to sell it." He confirmed the top was not sprayed (the grain is still open to the touch) and that the back, sides, and neck were, with a little color added to hide the cracks. He does **not** recommend any further finish work. **On the tuners.** The originals can go back on, but the headstock has been routed for the larger modern tuners. That means either conversion bushings or doweling and re-drilling the holes — "it's doable, it's not out of the question" — but with the wide bushings currently fitted, an outline circle will remain visible either way. Worth knowing before committing to a cosmetic return to original. **On the bridge plate.** He noticed the string winding riding up over the saddle: "that's just an indication that the bridge plate is worn. If the winding comes up over the saddle, you're not getting a pure tone from the string." His recommendation is to **repair rather than replace** — remove a conical cutout at each bridge pin hole, glue in a matching conical plug underneath, then re-drill the holes straight down. This also corrects the pin angle. **On the frets.** "They're ground down, and they're ground down on the edges here too, so they're actually kind of worn through on the sides." He believes they are original. A refret with slightly taller wire would lower the action, improve playability given the low saddle, and give a better intonation point. **On the guitar overall.** "I mean, this is a nice guitar." A player's guitar, right out of the box.
